Model years: 1998 - 2006
The intention of this article is to explain how to install roof bars (roof base support system) on BMW 3 Series E46 (1998-2005). Although this guide is for E46 sedan (saloon), it applies for coupe models as well. However, instructions do not apply for E46 touring (wagon) models, as different type of roof bars are used due to roof railing.
Genuine BMW E46 roof bars for sedan (original part no. 82710142220) were used in this guide.

How to install roof bars:
1. Open all four gutter flaps located at each corner of vehicle roof with a special gutter opener. If the opener is not present, plastic card will do. Use it to lift the flap until the finger is able to grasp it, open and lock into position:
2. Roof bar kit includes special wrench, which is a dual purpose tool, used for coded screws and Allen bolts. Coded screws fasten roof bars to the frame of the vehicle, Allen bolts adjusts the length of the roof bar. When tool's plastic handle is removed it can be used as an angle wrench to tighten Allen bolts. Connect the handle and angle wrench together to use the tool for coded screws:
3. Use installation tool at the time of roof bar installation, especially if a single person is dealing with it. This will prevent accidental damage to the roof.
4. To install roof bars properly, make sure bar's support feet are not too close or too far from each other to match the attachment points in the gutter. In case roof bar's feet do not match attachment points, foot on either bar side should be adjusted via loosening Allen bolts (1) and (2) until it slides easily:
5. Place roof bar feet in gutters and tighten coded screws with a help of special tool:
6. Tighten Allen bolts with an angle wrench:
